This handout was prepared for an Educational Moment called Online Learning Resources for Storytelling I led at one of my Toastmasters clubs. The group is composed of adult learners, advanced Toastmasters, and public speakers from many professional fields, so I wanted to assemble a list that would appeal to a diverse group of interests and skill levels.

Coursera

Coursera is an online education provider that offers online courses from leading universities like Stanford, Duke, and Princeton, and top companies like IBM and Google.

A majority of the courses have some element of “free,” but you’ll need to pay if you want access to graded assignments and certificates.

Tip: When you are trying to enroll in Coursera courses for free, look for the word audit.

Storytelling Courses on Coursera:

Khan Academy

The Disney-owned animation studio Pixar is helping others learn the secrets of great storytelling for free, in partnership with online education provider Khan Academy.

The two have teamed up to create “Pixar In A Box,” a behind-the-scenes look at how Pixar artists do their jobs, from animation and effects to creating memorable stories.

Udemy / Udemy for Business

Udemy is an online learning platform aimed at professional adults that provides a platform for experts of any kind to create courses which can be offered to the public, either at no charge or for a tuition fee. A subscription to Udemy for Business, which provides access to a curated selection of courses, may be available to you through your employer or library.
